What does UNLIMITED mean in your Essentials course? How often should I attend?

We have 7 classes a week purely dedicated for students who are new to yoga or wanting to focus on the basics. If you enrol in the 10-week unlimited course, you can attend as many of those classes as you desire. You should attend at least once a week, for continuity and progression through the syllabus. This is what most students do. Some students who are extremely keen come to classes three or more times a week. We encourage you to come as often as you can. We are passionate and enthusiastic and love to share our subject with others

The next round of courses begins from  February 3rd

Experienced but new to Iyengar Yoga

We welcome all new students who have a background in other yoga methods.

We hope that in coming to our school you approach with a sense of curiosity, and bring an open mind to learning. Iyengar Yoga is a method that connects to an ancient lineage with profound roots in philosophical enquiry. But Yoga is not an intellectual subject. It is based in action, in a practice. Experienced practitioners who enter with their eyes and ears open pick up nuance and context and can progress quickly. As you mature in your yoga practice you will come to understand that progress in yoga is not about being flexible or achieving success in ‘hard’ poses. Yoga can give us some wonderful tools for self observation that can lead to a fresh perspective and broader understanding and acceptance of ourselves as we move through this world.

The best way for most new students to enter the school is through the Essentials Course.

Many people now have some yoga experience and we recognise that you are not a beginner in Yoga, but you are new in our method of yoga (Iyengar). The Essentials Course prepares you for Level 1, and sets you up beautifully for the rest of your life in yoga. The Essential’s curriculum provides for all students to have a working understanding of foundation poses and the application of yogic processes. (That means, not just what you do, but how you do it) Students are introduced to the more complex and challenging asanas once these are established.

Iyengar Yoga practitioners develop more than just physical capacity in asanas. A psychological approach of curiosity, dedicated application and self-reflection equip us with tools to manage ourselves as the poses (or just life in general) become more complex and challenging. Iyengar Yoga is a method that employs physical allignment  in asana to help bring our busy   distracted minds to a place of centered stillness.

Allignment also highlights physical imbalances (ie tight hamstrings) and gives us a way to work and progress in spite of injuries and without causing injury. It is an intelligent yoga method as the intelligence is bought into contact with the body.

You can work your way up through the levels, perhaps more quickly, placing your existing experience into new context as you progress. Commonly old habits require some ‘unlearning’. Letting go of attachment to what we ‘know’ frees us from rigidity of perspective, enabling an experience of broader horizons…

If you are very keen, and attend regularly and consistently, you can talk to your teacher about moving up a level. We can best assess your suitability for the advanced classes once we have seen you in action.

For yoga practitioners with a strong and dedicated existing practice it may be appropriate to begin with us at one of the more advanced classes. Please call to discuss before booking.
