What to Expect
Practitioners
- are sent a handout with information including copies of the sequences
- Enter quietly and mark their name off on the role near the entrance without chatting.
- Can arrive 15 minutes early to use the studio and props for any preparation covered in classes. (e.g. elbows on the tressle for stiff shoulders or virasana on support for stiff knees.)
- set up their mats by 5 minutes before the practice start time, and lie back in supta baddha konasana or supta virasana.
- follow the leader, modifying poses or doing an alternative as learnt in class. suc (e.g. taking more height for seated poses / using the wall for support in standing poses /doing setu bandha on bolsters instead of shoulder balance)
- avoid overworking
Leaders
- are doing the practice with you.
- have practiced the sequence several times before leading it.
- have decided the best viewing angles for clear demonstrations of each pose as they practice.
- have worked out the timings using their breath or a quiet timer for longer poses such as shoulder balance.
- will call out the pose names, when to change sides and when to change or set-up for the next pose.
- will adjust supports for themselves as they need to and avoid overworking.
- will call alternative poses for those who are working more quietly (ie for menstruation or fatigue) if needed.
Sequences
- 5 sequences repeat each term
- are arranged with care and consideration around a weekly emphasis. Over a month the range of asana families are covered.
- are arranged for each session to bring balance in body and mind. Quietning poses towards the end with 10 minute savasana.
- are compiled from asanas learnt in classes of the same level
You
- become familiar with the asanas and sequences over time.
- develop clarity and knowledge through direct experience and repetition
- refine the tools of yoga, (asanas and pranayama) for their use in evolving practice for reflection and transformation
- your body becomes the ‘prop’ for mind to observe itself.
“The consciousness becomes favourably disposed and serene by contemplating an object that helps to maintain steadiness of mind”
Patanjali – Yoga Sutras

“One should stay in the asana as long as one is contemplative, reflective in that asana so that one becomes meditative in whatever asana one is performing”
