About Open Practice

Beyond the yoga class

Come along any time between 7am – 9am on a Wednesday, roll out a mat, and practice yoga.

Practice a sequence you have done in class recently, work from one of the sequences available at the studio or a sequence of your own.

Yoga classes can teach us what and how to practice, but they are not practice.

In class we rely upon a teacher to select which poses, the sequencing and timings, as well as the focus or lens to view our actions through. We are constantly having to look and listen outward for instruction.

In a practice we are left to our own devices with responsiblity for our choices. We can engage with our actions more intimately and look and listen from somewhere much quieter within ourselves.

Through this process we become our own teachers with the capacity to develop greater sensitivity  experiencing mental clarity and moments of profound peace of mind.

A quiet place

Practice can be a sanctuary, giving us the opportunity to reconnect with and observe ourselves outside of the usual bustle and business of our lives. We ask that practitioners arrive and set up / pack up quietly and conscientiously. A peaceful space is conducive for self-reflection.

Please be respectful of others and yourself and avoid chatting until after the session.

Yoga is described as a svadhaya, a Self-study. It can be interesting to just note the desire or urge to chat when it arises,  without having to act on the impulse.

At times there might be some quiet communication in the room when small groups of students practice together and one member of the group is leading a sequence. Provided the group is disciplined, focussed and mindful of others,  it is not a problem.
