Course information:

Iyengar yoga is a practice that recognises the complexity and interdependence of mind and body, and can be of great benefit to both. This is true for all people, regardless of age, health, fitness or experience.

Students in this 5-week program learn and become familiar with adapted poses from the Introductory Course syllabus. Sequences and modifications can be written up for reference in home practice and future classes.

Students may proceed to the Introductory Program or re-enrol in the Inclusive Yoga Course for further consolidation after completion of this course. Students continue to work with their adapted poses as long as required.

Our aim is to enable access for all.

Smaller student numbers in these classes enable students to develop and learn at their own pace in a supportive environment, which allows more individual time with the teacher.

Yoga is an ancient mind-body practice that can have a profound effect upon one’s experience of being. Iyengar yoga integrates highly defined actions in the body and mental observations in real-time. These actions, called asanas are based upon postural alignments and are therefore well suited to people with physical injuries and medical conditions.

The aim of a yoga practice is not to improve at doing yoga poses.

The aim of a yoga practice is to develop skills in self-study so that over time one can learn to let go of unhelpful or harmful beliefs that prevent us from experiencing our connection with all things. Yoga means union. Whilst the practices are often beneficial physically and can alleviate certain conditions that have arisen out of postural imbalances, our model is not a therapeutic one. The aim of our Bridging Course is to provide a pathway into the course syllabus. Students learn modifications and adaptations for poses that are covered in the Introductory courses.

Adjusting

Hands on ‘adjustments’ are an important part of the Iyengar Yoga teaching method.
Our teachers use physical touch on occasions as an effective aid to complement verbal instruction and visual demonstration. New beginners are however seldom adjusted.

Consent

By attending classes at Newcastle Yoga, we assume your consent to being adjusted. Please let your teacher know or email us if you are not comfortable with being adjusted or have questions about adjustments. We are happy to discuss and will of course respect your concerns.

Being Adjusted

Usually indicates that your teacher perceives you are ready to refine the pose further. Touch helps to direct attention to an area and understand an action. For example if a teacher touches you on the shoulder it can help you to feel the area and relax it away from the ears. Experiencing a sensation is the most direct way to learn.
